Starting School at Roslyn
Starting school is a milestone in a child’s life. It is a special and major event for parents and whānau too.
The following information will help you make an easy transition to school for both you and your child. It will inform you of some of the wonderful opportunities our students have at Roslyn School.
When your child starts school, they will start in Pīwakawaka (Room 1) and become members of our Te Tipu Ora team for our New Entrant to Year 2 ākonga. We have a fabulous, experienced and friendly teacher in our Pīwakawaka class, Tammy How, who is there to support you and your child on their journey to starting school.
Enrolling Your Child
If you are wishing to enrol your child at our wonderful kura, please come in and see our friendly office staff, and they will help you fill out all the necessary enrolment forms.
Parents of five year old children, and children who are new to New Zealand, must bring in their child’s birth certificate or passport to verify their date of birth. It is also essential you provide a copy of your child’s immunisation records.
We will arrange a time for you to come in for an initial visit, where you will be able to ask any questions you may have and have the opportunity to look around the school, if you have not done so already.
Transition to School
We really look forward to getting to know you and your child, and for them to become part of our Roslyn School whānau.
Part of our transition to school is focused on building relationships with your child so they are comfortable to be left alone with us, without you once, they are ready to start school. Transition visits are an important part of this progress and we strongly recommend them.
School transition visits begin in the five weeks leading up to your child starting school and can happen on any days specified by the Room 1 kaiako (teachers), with a maximum of 2 visits per week and 4 visits in total.
The times for school visits are as follows:
2.00pm - 3.00pm: Supervised visit
9.00am - 10.30am: Supervised visit
9.00am - 12.00pm: Unsupervised visit
9.00am - 1.00pm: Unsupervised visit
During your child's visits they will join in with our regular classroom activities. These will include:
Literacy
Maths
Rarangahia Ngā Whenu (our integrated, inquirying based curriculum programme)
Mat times
When you come for visits, we ask you to bring with you:
A healthy snack (fruit and vegetables are preferred)
A named water bottle
A named sunhat (compulsory for Terms 1 and 4)
Until your child is settled into school life, you will be required to stay with your child for these visits.
We encourage you to take a look around, ask questions and become part of our unique school family.
First Day of School
School starts at 8.55am.
Each day your child needs to bring:
School Regulation Sunhat (in Terms 1 and 4) (Plain navy bucket hat or plain navy wide brimmed hat)
School Bag
Lunchbox with morning tea. We provide lunch at Roslyn. However, if your child is a fussy eater, we suggest that you pack an extra sandwich just in case.
Water bottle (with water only)
A change of clothes (just in case)
Please make sure all of the above are clearly named.
Roslyn School has a ‘No Toys’ policy, so please ensure all toys stay at home unless the team has an organised a special event or activity that requires them to bring a toy (a letter would have been sent home or posted on Seesaw).
On the first day of school, you will need to come with your child to their classroom in the morning, and pick them up after school, to establish routines and to make sure that your child is comfortable being at school.
If your child is going to be late or absent from school, you will need to phone the absence line (354 7212 or 0800 800 605) or Report the Absence online (click to link) as soon as possible. You will receive a phone call at home if the office doesn’t hear from you to confirm the whereabouts of your child to ensure their safety.
Please support your child so they can:
Hang up their own bag.
Bring their lunchbox and drink bottle into the classroom and open them up independently.
Dress themselves and put on their own shoes (and can tie their own laces if they are wearing them... otherwise velcro shoes are a great option)
Can go to the toilet independently.
When you have completed our Roslyn School Enrolment Form, please bring it in to the school office with the following:
* The completed and signed Enrolment Form
* Childs Birth Certificate
* Childs Immunisation Record
* Information on any relevant health concerns
If you have any queries or would like some guidance while completing this form, please just ask at the school office.
